Search Engine Optimization When Using Meta-Titles

  • Search Engine Optimization When Using Meta-Titles

Today we are going to talk about Meta-Titles.  Don't be afraid if you are completely in the dark about what these terms mean.  A meta-title is basically just the name of a webpage.  It is also the way a search engine will determine how to place your page in the results when a person does a search.  Therefore, it is important to think about the terms in which people would be likely to search for in order to get to your site.  You should give every page on your site a different Meta-Title.  Obviously this will increase the amount of possible hits from searches.  You should also limit the meta-title to under 70 words.  Listing every word you can possibly think of in an attempt to get more hits will not work because search engines stop reading after about 70 words.

Let's say I am promoting a recipe I have posted on my site.  The recipe is for homemade cookies.  I could use a Meta-Title simply with the word 'cookies.'  I also would be wasting my time, because a title that vague would certainly not generate many hits.  It is better to play around with multiple variations and singular and plural tenses when writing a Meta-Title.  For this example, a good Meta-Title would be 'Best Homemade Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Recipe, Easy Fast Baking Recipes, How To Bake Homemade Cookies.'  Notice that no words are repeated, as this would be considered spamming.  However, this title would be far more likely to generate hits than the title of 'cookies.'  When writing your Meta-Title, capitalize every word as shown in the example.  A search engine is nothing more than a robot, albeit a robot programmed to weed through millions of sites.  This is why using various synonyms and tenses in your wording will increase the chances of your page ranking higher in search results.  Think like a customer when creating a Meta-Title, and choose your wording accordingly for the best SEO.

It is also important to use minimal punctuation when writing a Meta-Title.  It can take a little practice and creativity in addition to a thesaurus to create strong Meta-Titles the first few times.  However, once you get the hang of it, you should see your traffic increase significantly.
